Since the 4"x1"x1" neodymium magnets are too strong (I suspect that Alnico magnets were used in the 1980s), I have opted for 40x10x10mm magnets instead. These are weaker and make it easier to scale all the other components accordingly.

It is feasible to construct the entire shield by bending a single piece of mild iron. The laminated core from transformers provides an excellent source of mild iron for this purpose.
